Download Hour1 Download Hour2The election season is getting underway in earnest and the media, corporate and otherwise will be full of the platforms of parties, the sound bites of candidates, the pundits, pollsters and so on. What won't be on the table is the question of whether we even want the sort of society that the candidates are vying to lead. What won't be on the ballot is the question of the powerless of most people over the fundamental social structures that shape our lives . This week and over the coming weeks and months I'm going to read you a brilliant but little known book that a listener brought to my attention, that takes on those questions. It's called Power and Powerlessness and the author is Susan Rosenthal, a physician and psychotherapist who reached the conclusion after decades of research, observation and activism that social power is necessary for human health. We'll also hear, in a similar vein, an interview with writer and DIY activist Chris Carlsson about his new book "Nowtopia". |
