Bob Altemeyer is a professor who wrote a book, The Authoritarians about authoritarianism. It has one chapter on the psychology of authoritarian leaders, but most of the book presents a lot of empirical data about why so many people happily abdicate responsibility for big decisions in their lives to remote others (e.g. national political leaders) and how their psyche tries to justify this.
