Although it may seem contradictory to the modern reader, most of the world has run on a Gift Economy basis for most of history. Many places still do, they're just places you don't hear much about in the corporate media. The word "economy" comes from the greek "oikos", meaning household. Even in the belly of the capitalist beast, most households still run on a gift economy.
Some have said that the whole world couldn't run on a gift economy basis, because of people with no conscience who would mess it up. However, they also said that planes could never fly unless they were lighter than air - it may just be a question of harnessing the right technology!
