Download Hour1 Download Hour2The nation state is maintained by force and violence, whether ordered by monarchs, presidents or parliaments, and carried out by cops, courts and armies. Laws and customs vary among states, or are sometimes contested within states, but all nation states share a monopoly on the use official use of violence to maintain social relationships of unequal power and access to livelihood. These institutions of force are rationalized as crime prevention, justified to control human nature which is portrayed as selfish and brutal and prone to cutthroat competition. But do they rather not create a culture of callousness and competition through the hierarchies they enforce? |
