Download Hour1 Download Hour2This week we look at the use of propaganda to control public opinion in the United States.
Noam Chomsky speaks on propaganda and control of the public mind, what used to be referred to as 'propaganda', but underwent a euphemistic name change to 'public relations' after the first world war. As the US rich began to realise that the use of open force to protect their interests was becoming increasingly problematic, they quickly understood the need to control 'the public mind' instead, influencing people through media, schools, academia and other ways, to make sure that some questions - such as why so much privilege is heaped upon a few members of society at the expense of the others - are never asked. We conclude with an analysis of the media coverage of the Nader campaign by Ed Herman -- Chomsky's co-author of Manufacturing Consent.
