The Nurturing Parent is one of a pair of fundamental set of metaphors described by George Lakoff. The key assumptions include:

  • Children should be cared for, by parents of either gender.
  • Children should be modelled empathy and nurture so that they can nurture others.
  • Fairness is essential value.

First looked at in episode 505, this metaphor has been eclipsed somewhat in US politics in the last century through use of programs such as promoting Economic literacy by business interests.
